At the moment, the strategy concerning agriculture in Azerbaidjan is based on an increase of the productivity and of the foreign trade. This involves dramatic changes in the techniques of production, new techniques of distribution, an increase of the demand and of the consumption of domestic products and finally a development of the exports.
From 1991 to 1996, agriculture in Azerbaidjan declined due to political problems. Now the sector is stabilized due to a wave of reforms which began in August, 1996.
The main crop concerns wheat and breeding focuses essentially on ovine races. Fishing is a marginal activity because it supplies only 5 kg of catches per inhabitant.
For information, the country produces 10 % of the existing caviar in the world.
