Since 1991, the farming sector does not manage to get out of the slump and its part of the GDP accounts only for 6%. From 1996, more than 95% of farms were privatized in Estonia, increasing their number. However, since production costs have increased quicker than selling prices and banks were reluctant to grant credits to this sector, many farmers went bankrupt over these last few years.
