Agriculture plays a key role in Lithuania. It employs about 20% of the working population and represents 13% of the GDP. About 70% of agricultural lands have been privatized, leading to an important division of farms which were highly underequipped. In 1995, the growth was only at a 1.8%, for agriculture, it increased sharply to reach 20% in 1996.
