In the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, the role played by the agriculture in the economic development of the country dwindled in favour of activities of the service industries and telecommunications. However, a certain number of activities, which are upstream or downstream, is made possible thanks to agriculture, like professions specialized in the collection, processing and marketing of farm products. Besides, agriculture constitutes with forestry the branch of industry which allows the preservation of the "green" image of Luxemburg.
In 1999, Luxemburg developed vine-growing. Seven producers joined together in 1998 to promote a better quality of the Luxembourgian wine. The Industry is concentrated on a 300 metres wide hillside over the Moselle river. Up to now, the country exported 50% of its production, mainly to Belgium.
As for animal production (cattle, pigs), which represents the two thirds of the agricultural added value, it is the real wealth of the Luxembourgian agriculture.
