Transportation
Road
The main network connects southern Greece - Patras (Peloponese) to Athens and Thessaloniki (Macedonia) in northern Greece. The highways are generally in good condition, but the condition of the rest of the road network is relatively poor. The rate of fatal accidents is the highest in Europe, mainly because of over-speeding and poor quality of road construction. In case of an accident involving a third party, a police report is strongly suggested. If there are persons injured, one or both drivers can be kept in custody and then appear before court authorities, which will determine their liability. In most cases, it is required by local legislation to have a local lawyer to ensure one's defence. It is therefore necessary to check the risks covered by the car insurance policy (civil liability, bail payment and legal assistance).
Rail
The railroad network serves the main cities.
