Hello International Traders!

Uzbekistan has rich natural resources and lots of potential for trade. If you want to research trade opportunities with this Central Asian country, I've got a site in this issue for you. Do you use search engines a lot? I have a site that will help you use them more efficiently. I've also got a site with background on the corruption situation in dozens of countries. Finally, I have a site that will help students with the testing and admission process for colleges and universities -- so they have a better chance of getting in to their top school.

And don't forget -- if you'd like more information about international trade, go to FITA's Really Useful Links ( http://fita.org/webindex/index.html ), which has a link library of more than 8,000 sites related to international trade.

UZBEKISTAN -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY

In our reader survey a number of you asked for information about Uzbekistan, one of the former Soviet republics. This Central Asian country is rich in natural resources: for example, it's now the world's second-largest cotton exporter, a large producer of gold and oil, and a significant producer of chemicals and machinery. If you'd like to investigate trade possibilities with Uzbekistan, a good site to visit is the Uzbekistan Report at BISNIS ( http://www.bisnis.doc.gov/bisnis/country/Uzbekistan.cfm ). Scroll down the page and you'll find information about trade events, legal and regulatory reports, treaties, guides to doing business in Uzbekistan, industry reports, useful business contacts, and links to other sites of interest.

Another good resource is the Uzbekistan Mini Portal ( http://fita.org/countries/uzbek.html), one of the new features at the FITA site. The Mini Portal is a good place to start your research. There is an overview of the country, with facts about the language, currency, climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy, Uzbekistan markets, taxes, labor market indicators, tips on doing business, and a search engine to help you find market research on the Internet. There's also a news feed with the latest Uzbekistan news.

Click on "Useful Links" and you'll find a variety of sources for market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics, government contacts, travel, financing, and lots more.

The Uzbekistan Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the newly redesigned FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other regions or countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page ( http://www.fita.org ).

ANTI-CORRUPTION GATEWAY FOR EUROPE AND EURASIA

Doing business in another country can be a challenge, but it's even harder if you have to deal with political corruption. That's why sites like the Anti-Corruption Gateway for Europe and Eurasia ( http://www.nobribes.org/en/default.asp?ed=19 ) is so useful. This site has the latest information, news, and reports on corruption in dozens of countries in Europe and Asia. The best way to start is by clicking on "Reference Centre" in the left column. There you'll find information on corruption, news about corruption in various countries, anti-corruption strategies, various treaties and codes of ethics, and assessments of countries. There are also discussion groups, programs, and a calendar of events related to anti-corruption.

SEARCH ENGINES AND DIRECTORIES A TO Z

I use search engines every day, and I like to keep up with what's happening in the field, so I was happy when I found Search Engines and Directories A to Z ( http://websearch.about.com/library/searchengine/blsearchenginesat oz.htm ) at the About.Com sit. This is a comprehensive look at hundreds of search engines, in just about every category imaginable (did you know there's a search engine just for UK television shows?). Besides links to search engines, you'll also find many articles and tips on how to use them more effectively. This site is worth it for the Google Cheat Sheet alone, which has dozens of valuable tips on how to get the most out of your Google searches.

HELP WITH GETTING INTO A U.S. COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY: ADMISSIONS & FINANCIAL AID

As the parent of a high school student, I'm experiencing firsthand the anxiety of the college application process. There are millions of parents like me, both in the U.S. and abroad (there are almost 600,000 foreign students attending U.S. colleges and universities, and they're just the ones who got in). Luckily there are Web sites that can help, and here are two of them.

SAT Preparation ( http://www.sat-preparation.co.il ) has quizzes to help students prepare for the vocabulary section of the new SAT exam. Students can take a quiz, then find out what they got right and wrong immediately.

2005 Colleges, College Scholarships, and Financial Aid page ( http://www.college-scholarships.com ). This comprehensive site has links to free search engines for college scholarships and financial aid, plus test preparation tips, and college and university home pages.
