Hello International Traders!

John McDonnell here with four Web sites to make you more successful in international trade.

Austria is a success story in international trade, and it's a promising market to research. I have a site in this issue that will help you learn all about the Austrian market. If you're looking for trade financing, I have a site with a free searchable database of trade financing companies. Where's the best quality of life in the world? I have a site with rankings of cities worldwide for quality of life. Finally, I found a site with dozens of search engines that will help you find information you can't find anywhere else.

And don't forget -- if you'd like more information about international trade, go to FITA's Really Useful Links ( http://fita.org/webindex/ ), which has a link library of more than 8,000 sites related to international trade.

AUSTRIA
Our Featured Country

Austria was one of the poorest countries in the world after World War II, but in the years since then its economy grew exponentially, till it is now one of the richest countries. In 2008 Austria ranked 25th in the world for imports and 31st for exports. It has a well-developed market economy, an educated workforce, and a high standard of living. Like all countries, it has been affected by the global downturn, but countries like this, with a strong infrastructure and a history of success in the marketplace, are poised to rebound when the global economy gets better. If this sounds like a country you'd like to research further, go to AdvantageAustria.org (http://advantageaustria.org), a site operated by the Austrian Trade Promotion Organisation. Here you'll find everything you need to learn about Austria. There is information about importing from Austria, exporting to Austria, travel, facts & figures about the country, investing, news, trade events, business leads, partnership deals, and more. Click on the topic list on the right side of the screen to get information.

If that's not enough, you'll also find plenty of good research at the Austria Mini Portal (http://fita.org/countries/austria.html), a feature of the FITA Web site. The Austria Mini Portal has an overview of Austria, with facts about the language, currency, climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy, markets, taxes, labor market indicators, and tips on doing business in Austria. Click on "Useful Links" and you'll find a variety of sources for market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics, government contacts, travel, financing, and lots more.

The Austria Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other regions or countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page ( http://www.fita.org ).

SEARCH FOR TRADE FINANCING WITH FINDATA
Trade Finance in Developing Countries

If you need to find a source of financing in a developing country, go to the International Trade Centre's FINDATA (http://www.intracen.org/dbms/CL_Search/CL_Search.Asp?DS=DATAFIN), which is a searchable database of financial institutions (major banks, credit insurance agencies, export credit agencies, etc.) in developing and transition countries that support international trade. You just select a country, financial product, and type of institution, and FINDATA will give you a list of institutions that fit your criteria. Click on the name of an institution and you'll see a list of financial products (export credits, forfaiting, letter of credit, etc.) the institution offers, plus the financial institution's contact information (fax and telephone numbers, e-mail and Web addresses, mailing addresses, names of officers, etc.).

FORTUNE MAGAZINE AND FITA TO OFFER A SPECIAL SECTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE
http://fita.org/fortune/sellsheet.html

Fortune Magazine has teamed with FITA on a special section in the June 8 issue titled "A Fresh Look at International Trade." To expose Fortune’s readers to what’s happening in Asia, Europe, South America, and elsewhere in the world—and to look at how the financial crisis and decisions in Washington may affect business—Fortune Custom Publishing, in partnership with FITA, is creating a special text-and-advertising section that asks:

  • Which finance companies, logistics companies, and other international trade service providers offer innovative solutions in the current environment?
  • Which emerging economies are going to be able to sustain some growth?
  • Where are trade barriers and regulations going to increase?
  • Which industries are already innovating in the way they do international trade?
  • Can fair trade and environmental protection help restore growth in international trade

This section will provide a unique opportunity to promote and showcase your organization to Fortune’s audience of business decision-makers—all in a clear, informative environment.  Be a sponsor and get your organization exposure to the world's top executives and business leaders.  Click here for information and contact details.

GLOBAL QUALITY OF LIFE RANKINGS
Find the Best Places to Live

What's the best city in the world to live in? That's a hard question to answer, because it depends on what criteria you're using. However, the Mercer company has come out with their Mercer Quality of Living Global City Rankings (http://www.mercer.com/qualityofliving?siteLanguage=100), a report that analyzes many factors to come up with rankings for cities around the globe. Mercer uses 39 key quality of living determinants, grouped in categories like: Political and Social Environment, Economic Environment, Health and Sanitation, Public Services and Transportation, Housing, and more. The Number One city for overall quality of living in this year's survey? Zurich, Switzerland. The city at the bottom this year is Baghdad. To see the top 50 rankings for quality of life and for personal safety (another Mercer list), scroll down to the bottom of the page. There is a link to click on for the complete rankings (215 cities).

Ever heard of the Deep Web? It's a term for the part of the Internet that doesn't get indexed by the major search engines like Google and Yahoo.
