Our Featured Country

Located at the far-eastern end of Europe and extending across all of northern Asia, Russia is a unique country because of its size. With more than 17 million square kilometers (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is the largest country (in area) in the world. It is rich in natural resources, especially petroleum products, forest reserves and mineral resources. Natural resources are almost all products exported from the country.

Russia’s economic power was extremely diminished by the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, the dissolution of the COMECON (an isolated trading area that comprised Russia, the CIS countries plus the Central and East European Countries, many of which are now members of the European Union) and the transition process to capitalism. And the recent worldwide economic crisis has made it yet somewhat worse.

With huge inequities in wealth distribution, the persistence of corruption, the nine time zones that cut up the territories and the difficulties of transportation logistics, the Russian market is not the easiest to access. But with more than 140 millions inhabitants, opportunities are always possible.

To help you to improve your competitiveness in trade with Russia, you can get assistance from the Coalition for US – Russia Trade. For updates on Russian laws and legal reforms, take a look at Russian Laws News. And read the latest news from Russia at

And don't forget the website of the U.S. Commercial Service in Russia. The site offers extensive information about the market through news, guides and the Commercial Service programs conferences, trade missions and training sessions. If that's not enough, you'll also find plenty of good research at the FITA Russia Mini Portal (, a feature of the FITA Web site. The FITA Mini Portal has an overview of the country, with facts about the language, currency, climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy, markets, taxes, labor market indicators, and tips on doing business in UK.

The Russia Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page.

Profit from Cultural Awareness

Globesmart is a cross cultural resource that helps improve teamwork, management, negotiation, perception of consumer habits, etc. through understanding of cultural differences and adaptation. The website offers cultural “generalizations” (defined as concepts that have “general application” and that can be changed with the presentation of new information) rather than “stereotypes” (defined as concepts that have “fixed, unvarying ideas” that cannot be adjusted with new information). This policy guaranties the quality of the information provided. The website charges a subscription fee but lets you look at 3 full services for free. The content will help you learn the typical styles and strategies that are commonly used by negotiators in different cultures, understand the different expectations of customers around the world, adapt training to domestic needs and prepare expatriates to modify behavior when moving abroad.
