Czech Republic
Our Featured Country

Located in the heart of Central Europe, between Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria, the Czech Republic is seen by foreign investors as a perfect gateway to the single European market of 455 million consumers.

The Czech Republic’s economy is one of the most dynamic in Central and Eastern Europe. It is mainly based on services, which account for nearly 60% of GDP. Financial services, accounting, IT services and customer support make up most of the services sector. The manufacturing sector is dominated by the car industry. For more information, consult the Czech Business Web Portal.

Foreign Trade makes up nearly 150% of the Czech GDP. The country imports oil, gas and machinery while its main exports are motor vehicles, machinery, chemicals and ceramics. 80% of the country’s trade is conducted with OECD countries (of which the EU countries represent 80%). The United States is Czech Republic's fourteenth largest export market and its thirteen’s largest supplier. For more information, consult Foreign Trade Statistics on the website of the Ministry of Industry and trade.

The Czech distribution network is dominated by big foreign groups, in particular UK, Austrian, and German companies, with hypermarkets representing 44% of total retail trade. The number of traditional local shops and neighborhood stores are decreasing because of this. Non-store retailing (internet retailing and direct selling) increased over the last few years, reaching almost $464.3 million in B2C sales and $351.2 million in B2B.

Czech Republic is one of the world’s most attractive locations for Foreign Direct Investment, mainly because of favorable investment incentives such as the non-discrimination and equality of treatment between nationals and foreigners, the protection of investment, the avoidance of double taxation and the protection of property rights and the export of profits. For more information, read the articles Czech Republic Investment Climate 2009 on and Why to invest in Czech Republic on Czechinvest.

Visit also the websites of the Czech Embassy in the United States and the American Chamber of Commerce in Czech Republic. Also the U.S. Commercial Service in Czech Republic will give you extensive information about the market with news and business guides and the Commercial Service’s programs conferences, trade missions and training. If that's not enough, you'll also find plenty of good research at the FITA Mini Portal of the Czech Republic a feature of the FITA Web site. The FITA Mini Portal has an overview of the country, with facts about the language, currency, climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy, markets, taxes, labor market indicators, and tips on doing business in the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page.
