Our Featured Country

When considering investments in the Far East, Japan can be a good location to use as a regional business hub.

Japan’s economy, until being recently being overtaken by China, was the second largest in the world. It is mainly based on services, which constitute two thirds of GDP, with banking, insurance, real estate, retailing, transportation and telecommunications accounting for the largest part. The industrial sector is diversified and contributes nearly 30% to GDP. Two of the main manufacturing sectors are the car and ship building industries, and Japan is world’s second largest producer of cars and ships. Agriculture, which is heavily subsidized, accounts for 5% of GDP. For more information about the structure of the Japanese economy consult the Regional Economic Report of the Bank of Japan.

Japan's main product exports are cars, ships, electronic devices and computers, while its most important imports are raw materials such as oil, coal, foodstuff and wood. Its most important trade partners are China (main supplier) and the USA (main customer), followed by South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and Australia. Despite the economic crisis and the decline of economic activity in the US, foreign trade sustains the economy, with imports benefiting from the appreciation of the yen. For more information, consult Foreign Trade Statistics on the Ministry of Finance Website.

The Japanese distribution network is dominated by specialized stores that represent almost all types of outlets (88%), most sales (57%) and most employees in the sector (65%). Supermarkets are in second position with a market share of sales of 30% although they only represent 9% of stores. Non-store retailing (internet retailing and direct selling) increased hugely over the last few years and even surpassed predictions, reaching almost USD 770 billion in B2C sales and USD 950 billion in B2B.

JETRO, or the Japan External Trade Organization, is a Japanese government-related organization that promotes mutual trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world. JETRO's main activities are promoting foreign direct investment into Japan and helping small and medium-sized Japanese firms export. Their websites offer many resources for investment in Japan as well as opportunities for doing business with Japanese companies. JETRO’s US website offers opportunities specific to US companies as well as access to JETRO’s six US offices.

For more information about the country, visit the websites of the Embassy of Japan in the United States, the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, and the U.S. Commercial Service in Japan. The sites give extensive information about the market with news and business guides, and the Commercial Service programs conferences, trade missions and training. If that's not enough, you'll also find plenty of good research at the FITA Mini Portal of Japan a feature of the FITA Web site. The FITA Mini Portal has an overview of the country, with facts about the language, currency, climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy, markets, taxes, labor market indicators, and tips on doing business in Japan.

The Japan Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page.
