Business Opportunities Despite Political instability

The still-unstable political environment in Tunisia has not prevented some foreign companies from setting up business in the country. In effect, the departure of the government of former president Ben Ali has opened new possibilities for overseas executives who hesitated entering the Tunisian market because of corruption and overall plunder of the country's economy. Large corporations, who until now have not had a large presence in Tunisia, today perceive new business opportunities in a country that needs important investments over the next few years, especially in electronics and telecommunications.

The predicted falls in property values and stock market prices, and IMF forecasts of GDP growth for 2011 of over 3% are also attractive to investors. Finally, although tourism, one of the main sectors of the Tunisian economy (10% of GDP), has been heavily affected by the events of recent weeks, several construction projects currently underway (in particular shopping centers and rehabilitation of transport infrastructure) could restart.

It is likely that the business climate in Tunisia will become stronger in the medium term, and the country appears likely to attract more foreign investment. Thus, companies that have taken advantage of early opportunities offered by the new democratic reforms under way will have an edge over their competitors.
