OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: Taiwan
Taiwan: A hub for U.S. Asian strategy?

Taiwan is an independent republic based on a parliamentary democracy. It’s the first country in Asia to have elected its president using direct universal suffrage. In terms of regional cooperation, Taiwan is a member of the WTO, as well as the Asian Development Bank and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. In addition, Taiwan is an important trade partner for the U.S. In 2012, Taiwan was the United States’ 10th supplier and its 15th client. Between 2009 and 2012, American exports to Taiwan increased by nearly 32%, whilst imports increased by 37% over the same period.

As a world leader in the production of high-tech products, Taiwan offers business opportunities in many different industries for American companies. In the IT industry, the island invests billions of dollars in cloud computing services, in the development of smart grid and building wireless networks. Finally, Taiwan is the sixth largest export market for U.S. agricultural products. The island mainly imports wheat, corn, soy and meat. Nearly 30% of agricultural products imported by Taiwan come from the United States; this makes the island the world's largest importer per capita of U.S. agricultural products!
