OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: Australia
The Australian Minister of Trade & Investment will visit the United States to participate in the Global Services Summit scheduled to take place in Washington D.C. on October 30. The service sector plays a very important role for Australia's economy, as it accounts for 78% of GDP and employs 3 out of every 4 Australians.

The minister announced that he will be meeting with U.S. officials to discuss bilateral trade between the two countries and to identify future investment opportunities. The U.S. is the leading investor in Australia with nearly a quarter of all foreign direct investment entering the country from the U.S. In terms of the commercial sector, in 2012, the U.S. was the 5th largest customer (3.7% of exports) and the second largest supplier (11.7% of imports) of Australia.

Australia and the United States are bound by a Free Trade Agreement that significantly improves the attractiveness of U.S investment in the country. This agreement eliminates two-thirds of the tariffs on agriculture products (except sugar and dairy that are outside the quota) and more than 97 % of tariffs on non–agricultural products.

The visit of the Australian minister is also the opportunity to discuss the status of negotiations for the implementation of the Trade in Service Agreement, also known as TISA, and the Trans–Pacific Partnership Agreement, a multilateral free trade Agreement which aims to integrate the economies of the Asia-Pacific region. Indeed, Australia plays a leading role in these negotiations aimed to eliminate barriers to trade in services between the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
