OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: Russia
A visit from the Russian Minister of Economic Development is scheduled to take place this week in Washington and it will demonstrate a new attempt to boost bilateral trade between the two countries which has been strained in recent years. According to U.S. government figures, U.S. imports from Russian fell by -8.2% between 2012 and 2013. As for exports, they increased slightly by approximately 4.3 % over the same period. Between 2011 and 2013, trade between Russia and the United States (imports + exports) fell by 11%, from nearly 43 billion USD in 2011 to 38 billion USD in 2013.

This drop is due to a number of factors. The main reason for the decline in Russian exports to the United States lies in the decreased U.S. dependence on foreign mineral resources. In addition, bilateral trade between the two countries suffers from geographical remoteness and logistical difficulties. For these reasons, Russia has been turning more towards European and Chinese suppliers. Finally, U.S. exports to Russia are regularly affected by the depreciation of the Russian ruble, which make exports more expensive and therefore less competitive.

Many analysts believe trade between Russia and the United States has a high potential for growth that could be achieved through an improved legislative framework. In 2012, Russia was not part of the top 10 suppliers or customers of the U.S. As for the United States, in 2012 they were the 5th supplier to Russia, representing 4.9% of total imports from Russia, however still remain short of being one of their top 10 clients.

All these issues should be addressed by the Russian Minister of Economic Development and its U.S. counterparts during a series of meetings, among which a working group of the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission, a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State for trade, and a visit to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
