OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: China
On a recent visit to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the new U.S. ambassador to China said that the promotion of a bilateral investment treaty between the two largest economies in the world will be his priority. In the past, the new ambassador appointed by Barack Obama in February 2014 had already supported the idea to normalized relations between China and the United States and called for the entry of China into the World Trade Organization trade relations (WTO).

China and the United States began negotiations in 2008, but these negotiations have since stalled, mainly because of the lock placed by China on a long list of protectionist measures. However, a new round of negotiations was held in June 2013 in Beijing to move forward.

In 2013, China was the third largest consumer of U.S. goods, accounting for 7.7% of total U.S. exports. Between 2004 and 2013, U.S. exports to China increased by 255%. In 2013, China was the number one provider to the United States, with 19.8% of total U.S. imports. While previously in 2012, the United States was the fifth largest foreign investor in China, accounting for 2% of the total amount of FDI in the country.

In 2012, the major U.S. exports to China were oilseeds and grains, parts for the aerospace, automotive, navigation and measurement instruments, medical devices, chemicals, resins and synthetic rubber. As for the main products imported by the United States from China in 2012, they consisted of computer and communication equipments, clothing, semiconductor and other electronic components, footwear, audio and video equipment and home furnishings.

With a market of over 1 billion people, a growing middle class and significant investment in infrastructure, China is an important export market for U.S. goods and services.
