Hello International Traders!

Kuwait is a small but rich country whose imports run into the billions of dollars, and if you want to research this fertile market, I've got two great sites for you. If you're one of the millions of Microsoft Office users, I found a site where you can download hundreds of useful MS Office templates for free. Also, I've got a site where you can get information about foreign Social Security laws and regulations. Finally, I've got a site with weather-related travel delay forecasts -- useful information for anyone who travels a lot.

If you'd like more information about international trade, go to FITA's International Trade/ Import-Export Portal ( ), an excellent source for trade leads, news, events, and a link library of 7,000 sites related to international trade.

Due to high oil prices and output, Kuwait's economy earned almost US $12 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal year, the country's Finance Ministry recently said. A desert climate that severely limits agriculture means that Kuwait has to import much of its food and even water. The country also imports large quantities of construction materials, vehicles and parts, and clothing, according to the CIA World Factbook.

If you'd like to find out more about trade with Kuwait, here are two excellent sites.

  • Arab.Net page on Kuwait ( ). This is a good starting point for research on Kuwait, with resources on the country's history, climate, culture, government, and some how-to articles about doing business in Kuwait.
  • Kuwait Free Trade Zone ( ). The Kuwait Free Trade Zone has been established to help foreign companies do business, and it offers a number of incentives. This site will get you up to speed on what the Free Trade Zone is all about, and how to use it successfully.

Another useful resource is the National US-Arab Chamber of Commerce ( ). This FITA member site supports trade in the Middle East, and has research data about the region, as well as sponsoring conferences and other events.

There are many more links to Kuwait at the FITA site. Go to, click on Regional Resources and Multi-Lateral Trading Areas in the left column, then scroll down to Middle East/Africa and click on Kuwait in the drop-down box. Or simply type "Kuwait" in the search box at And a good book in FITA's Global Trade Bookstore about doing bisness in Kuwait is Doing Business With Kuwait.

If you do business overseas you may be affected by the increasing number of countries that have Social Security programs. There are laws and regulations concerning Social Security in foreign countries that may have an impact on employers who do business with these countries. Social Security In Other Countries ( ) is a good site to visit, because it has links to the relevant agencies in countries from Algeria to Venezuela, plus international organizations that have to do with labor, pension funds, and Social Security.

Here's a site my wife will be using on a regular basis. Intellicast ( ) is a weather site, but it's got more than just flashy weather graphics and daily forecasts. This site has travel delay forecasts, which is a boon to anyone who travels a lot for business, as my wife does. You just click on "Travel Forecasts" at the home page, and you'll come to a page with categories you can click on to get detailed information and predictions about weather that could affect travel. You'll find U.S. and international travel forecasts for the next five days, FAA flight delays, radar maps, satellite photos, temperature and wind current data, and much more. There are also 10-day forecasts, a storm tracking center, and enough weather info to keep even the most hard-core weather geek satisfied. As with many sites these days, there are pop-up ads, but just scroll to the bottom of the page to find your information.

Although I believe in using my natural creativity whenever I have to write something, there are times when it's nice to have a template that I can use for mundane tasks. I was amazed to see just how many templates there are at Microsoft Office Templates ( ). There are forms for calendars, party planning, business cards, Microsoft PowerPoint backgrounds, letters to customers, brochures and other marketing materials, customer surveys, business plans for a startup company, and hundreds more. These templates are free, and all you have to do is download them and import them into your Microsoft Office program. You can even suggest a template if you don't see what you need. Finally, there's a forum where you can ask questions of other Microsoft Office users.
