“How YOU and your COMPANY and associates can be sure your Products/Software and Technology that are exported or re-exported are in compliance with Current Export Regulations” Joe Tosto, Bureau of Export Administration In light of the Attack on America in September, Mr. Tosto indicated that they are getting a lot of questions about what companies can do to make sure they are not providing a product that can be used by terrorists to produce chemical or biological weapons. It turns out that there have been several companies who have been fined in the millions of dollars for exporting such products. A number of handouts were provided, relating to export compliance. One of the handouts, "Introduction to the Commerce Department's EXPORT CONTROLS was used as the presentation guideline. The four points covered in some detail: 1. What are you exporting? In addition, BXA's website: www.bxa.doc.gov was reviewed, specifically on where to look for answers to questions; a list of BXA Western Regional offices staff was provided; a list of RED FLAGS exporters must be aware of to prevent violations and protect our country's National Security and most importantly a list of BXA seminars for the next nine months was provided. Many questions from exporters, re-exporters, freight forwarders, logistics service providers, trucking companies, bankers and other individuals involved in international trade were discussed in an open forum. The general consensus of the audience was that export compliance is not just something to be done to comply with regulations. The National Security of America depends on each and every individual and company involved to exert the effort and energy required to meet the challenges facing America. Joseph M. Tosto, Jr.
